Opening Video for the 82nd Long Range Surveillance Detachment’s combat deployment to Afghanistan, Operation Enduring Freedom VIII, January of 2007 to March of 2008. This footage is all real combat in Tagab Valley, just north of Kabul where the 82nd LRSD’s Firebase was located. The Firebase, formerly known as “Pathfinder” has been named “Kutschbach” in Honor of SSG “Pat” Patrick Kutschbach, a member of ODA 021, who died on Nov 10, 2007 during combat operations in Tagab Valley. 82nd Long Range Surveillance Detachment, Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) Part I of II. The 82 LRSD Deployed to Afghanistan in January ‘07 and conducted their bread & butter special recon and surveillance missions until July ‘07. During the month of July, the 82 LRSD had a serious change of mission- and went full spectrum. Equipped with new Up-Armored Humvee’s and crew-served weapons, 82 LRSD plunged headfirst into the Tag Ab Valley that was at the time a Taliban safe haven. During the month of August, LRSD conducted a thorough sweep of Tag Ab Valley to corner the Taliban and force them out, prompting some of the fiercest battles recently seen in Afghanistan. Part I ends in early September ‘07 of the 82nd LRSD’s 15 month deployment into Afghanistan.

82nd Long Range Surveillance Detachment, Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) Part II of II. Part II picks up in September ‘07, and details life at Firebase Kutschbach throughout the fall and winter of ‘07-’08 for the men of 82nd LRSD. Combat Operations formally ended in March ‘08 for the Detachment, and the men finally arrived home at Fort Bragg, NC after 15 months of hard overseas duty in Afghanistan.
If you’re the typical American who’s knowledge of the conflict overseas is restricted to what you view on the news — you probably think that the only “intense” campaign is Iraq. This video is evidence enough that Afghanistan is still alive and raging, and is in need of more serious coverage and consideration.
